So we just released another album with a local Oshawa band, The Harvest Conspiracy – congrats to them on a successful release show. Coming up in December, we here at Get Bent Records will be putting out our 9th release of the year…quite a lot for a little unknown label run by a few shabby miscreants. That release will be our 3rd custom-made 45rpm 7 inch vinyl single – this time with rockin’ duo The Standstills Its great to have so much new music happening all the time, kinda inspiring…

Speaking of new music… here’s a few of the new things spinning around here lately:

Howlin Rain – Phantom In The Valley from The Russian Wilds, due out February

Band of Skulls – The Devil Takes Care of His Own

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – The Death of You and Me

And for you music fans and biz folks, here’s a couple interesting articles from Lefsetz land… including a not-so-new song that’s a good listen:

Its hard to get noticed

In 2009 Noel Gallagher quit British rock band Oasis, citing irreconcilable differences with his brother Liam and the rest of the band. Liam and the remaining members have gone on to form Beady Eye, whose debut album Different Gear, Still Speeding was released earlier this year. In a recent interview, Liam stated ‘The songwriting’s just as good (as Oasis) and the playin’s fookin’ bettah’.

I’ve been listening to Different Gear and to me it just doesn’t cut it. Noel was not only Oasis’ chief songwriter, he sang a lot of the tunes. He is credited by some as spear-heading the ’90’s Brit-pop movement and influencing numerous follow-up bands including the Boo Radleys, Ocean Color Scene, and more.

So here’s a few tunes from the new Beady Eye album, followed by a list of 10 of my fav. Oasis/Noel Gallagher tunes. You be the judge…
PS. Word is Noel’s working on a solo disc.

I, FRANK POWERS have been busy battling psychic demons across time and space. We here at the POWERZONE are deeply apologetic for our absence these many moons. Our organization is thrilled to have taken residence in our new headquarters, the location of which will remain hidden from the general public, as per our security parameters.

While our resources have been tapped from all these intergalactic comings and goings, all of us down here at the POWERZONE are deeply committed to reuniting ourselves with all the pour souls who have been victimized by these invisible warriors from the fourth dimension.

We have begun intensive planning on the future of the POWERZONE and its activities.

That is all.

Sincerely,

So the DGB is on the road again. The van is starting to feel more like home than our house. Last year I spent 10 weeks on the road, and this year we have already done 8. Last year I kept up written tour blogs over the course of the tours. This year I have been doing twitter updates (http://www.twitter.com/theDGB) and video blogs (http://www.youtube.com/theDGBtube), and haven’t bothered keeping up a written journal. Those two formats will remain my most used methods, however I am taking the opportunity of sitting in the back of the van on the way to Kingston as a chance to tell a few stories from this tour so far.

We kicked off this falls tour with farewell shows in our home markets. We started with a weekend in Peterborough and Oshawa. The Peterborough show got all screwed up. All the other bands on the bill canceled last minute, it was the first week of school, and we had more competition this night then could even seem possible in such a small city. It looked like it was going to be an awful way to kick off a tour, but as it turned out we had a handful of really good friends show up, and we had a pretty good party.

Then it was off to Oshawa. We knew this show was going to be good because we were playing with some of our favorite bands from the city. Sierra Padre opened the night with there slow and groovy but still marvelously entertaining set. Micronite Filters were up next, and they were debuting their new music video. The audio wouldn’t work right, so they ended up playing over it, and managed to do it in PERFECT time with the video. Considering the mess of spilled beer and broken glass, our set went pretty good too.

After a final few days at home, we kicked off the road trip portion of our tour in Sudbury the following Friday. Considering all the confusion in the line-up we had a pretty sweet show at the Townehouse. We played with some awesome bands, and ended up running into some friends. Afterwards we ended up at a party on the other side of town, and despite our early departure time the following day, we stayed up drinking till 5am. We were given an apartment under the bar to stay in, which was really cool, and I’m pretty sure at one point or another every Canadian band has stayed there. We were checking the place out and managed to set the alarm off twice very, very early in the morning. Felt real dumb the second time, but we were quite drunk, and that defense is good for 9/10 situations.

I just remembered why I started doing video blogs instead of written – because it takes a long time to write all this shit out! Follow the video blogs @ http://www.youtube.com/theDGBtube

I was just witness to one of the most lame bands I’ve seen in a long time. This is all at once good and bad. We’ll start with the bad: how do you know your band is lame? When you preview the set with an A Cappella throat warmup on the street outside the bar. When you’re playing the most shit-hole bar in town and still need to use all your 16 channel inputs that your own bad sound guy sets up for you. When your drummer does a 10 minute solo and you leave the stage to get a drink – in a 45 minute set. When all your songs sound the same, and they’re not all one song. When all your songs sound like they belong to someone else. And when your bad sound guy victoriously tells about how he ‘got such a good sound out of such a crappy sound system’ after the gig. More bad: how did this band end up here? Because 94.9 started playing their song… ever the purveyors of lame mainstream monotony.

The good? (don’t worry, its not all bad). With the exception of a few ‘bar regulars’ the gig was empty, there were more people on the patio. The band was at least tight, if not original. After 45 mins it was over. It made me realize how good we have it around here, with so many great original artists and bands creating great music and art.
When I see this kind of lame show its both saddening and invigorating. As much as there is crap out there, there is way more good, and i have to believe that the good will win out in the end. The good, like the upcoming Culture Days weekend on Sept. 23-26 – There’s lots of great local stuff to be scene and heard. So let’s celebrate it, and not let it get swept under the lame rug.

Thanks 94.9 , Ashtray, and Krome for at once making my ears bleed, only to open my eyes again.

Peace

Not so long ago, a magical fantasy befell a band of misfit friends. They met a mysterious fellow who invited them on a rocket from infinity. They whispered words about a change of fate, and went off into the night.

“What do you seek?” they asked as they rode up in the clouds.

When they were as high as the moon the man began conversations.

He said “These are hard pressed times, there are many grubby hands looting the world, drunk on Texas tea. From the outside it’s hard to see, buts it’s burning down. The world is on the fritz and I brought you here to save it.”

“How do we do that?” they asked.

“You must slay the dragon on the eve of the electric blue sun – that is tonight.”

“This is abstract,” they said. “Something must be lost in translation.”

“Slow down!” called the man to the pilot. “We are approaching sacred ground.

Now you must go. When the giant wakes, follow him along the north wind.”

So off they went and soon came to a face in the lake. She told them the secrets of the mole-men, and they knew how to slay the dragon.

Worthless blues were in the air and the world was an inferno, but the misfit friends knew the trick. They flipped a bent cigarette into the behemoth’s mouth. Puff went the dragon’s mystic fires as the asbestos hit its lungs! Free from the scorching flame, the one-eyed giant killed the dragon, and the rest is history.

That’s how the Micronite Filters saved the world.

Now let’s get drunk!

Shut off the ‘unedgy’ radio stations and go to the web.
Tune out the lame music shoved down your throat and seek out something new.
‘Steal’ from the industry that lines corporate pockets.
Stop going to over-priced shows, especially to see has-beens replay the same set they did 25 years ago.
Don’t listen to high-end compressed mp3’s in little ear buds, and NEVER pay $1 for an mp3

And we’re continually being blamed for the industry’s demise?

More people are making music, and more music of substance is getting heard. So screw the ‘industry’, because without the audience, there is no industry. Hmmm… Music with no industry… music for the sake of music, for art. Wow, we can actually use it to reach people, to say something interesting, useful, creative, inspirational. What a concept!

So lets go back, back to a time when music was about telling stories and sharing ideas. And let’s go back to vinyl – listening party anyone?

Is it just me or do most bands suck? I don’t mean suck in the songwriting sense, but suck in the musicianship sense. Have Nirvana and the White Stripes dumbed music down the point where people who only know two chords think they can start a band? Personally, I don’t go to shows of bands of never heard of for that reason. Why would I spend even 5 bucks to support someone who doesn’t even practice their instrument?

By the way, you should listen to the album ‘Avatar’ by Comets On Fire, now there are some folks who can play.
